BC: ICBC Contract Should Wait

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/05/03

The B.C. Government is doing the right thing by holding off on a new contract with 4,600 ICBC employees.

While it’s unfortunate that the employees have been without a contract for the past 18 months or so, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon is correct when he says the ongoing ICBC audit could radically change the Crown Corporation. From the Times Colonist:

"We're reviewing all Crown corporations and I think it's important to complete the review, as we expect to do by August, prior to making any further decisions, especially financial decisions," said Kevin Falcon, whose Finance Ministry is responsible for ICBC.

The same team audited BC Hydro last year and discovered overspending and overstaffing, a lucrative and too accessible bonus plan and a “gold standard” corporate culture. Having no union contract gives ICBC real flexibility in quickly dealing with many of the issues bound to come up in this review.
